Differences between American and British English: lawyer
In both the U.S. and the U.K., lawyer is the general word for a trained legal adviser. A lawyer in the U.S. is sometimes referred to as an attorney in formal speech or official letters. In the U.K., a lawyer who does most of their work in an office is usually called a solicitor. A lawyer who does most of their work representing people in court trials is called a barrister in England and an advocate in Scotland. In both the U.S. and the U.K., counsel is the formal legal word for a lawyer who is representing people in court, and in a U.S. court, you might call them Counselor.
